A Lawsuit Targeting “Woke” Sports

America First Legal (AFL), the conservative legal group founded by former Trump senior advisor Stephen Miller, has filed a federal civil rights complaint against the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball organization. The complaint, filed with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, alleges the team is “engaging in unlawful discrimination under the guise of ‘Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion’ (DEI).”

The lawsuit specifically targets the Dodgers’ commitment to “embedding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion strategies into every aspect of the organization” and its sponsorship of programs specifically geared toward “women and people of color.”

Discrimination in the Name of “Diversity”?

AFL argues that these policies violate Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. The complaint alleges that the Dodgers’ DEI initiatives lead the organization to illegally consider these protected categories when making employment decisions.

“Our mission is to create a culture where diverse voices and experiences are valued,” the Dodgers’ official mission statement reads. However, AFL argues that in practice, these DEI programs result in a system of illegal preferences that discriminate against certain groups.

A Backlash to a Liberal Organization

The lawsuit comes as the Dodgers have become increasingly known for their progressive political stances. As noted by The Blaze, the legal challenge is seen by some as a direct response to the team’s recent public criticism of federal ICE raids and its $1 million commitment to aid immigrants.

The complaint against the Dodgers is part of a much larger, nationwide legal campaign by AFL to dismantle corporate DEI programs, which they argue are a form of illegal, race-based discrimination. The pressure appears to be having an effect. As reported by HR Grapevine, Major League Baseball itself recently removed the word “diversity” from its website, a move seen as a reaction to the shifting legal and political landscape. The lawsuit against one of baseball’s most storied franchises has now become a central battleground in the ongoing culture war over DEI.
