A longtime Beltway pundit just told Americans to use a slavery‑remembrance holiday as a weapon to “annoy MAGA.”
Story Snapshot
- Bill Kristol urged followers on X to celebrate Juneteenth specifically to “Annoy MAGA,” turning a national holiday into a political taunt.[6]
- Juneteenth was created to honor the end of slavery in America, not to score points in today’s partisan brawls.[10][11]
- Liberal writers now label Juneteenth an “anti‑MAGA holiday,” trying to brand a day of freedom as a weapon against Trump voters.[18]
- Conservatives argue that twisting history into a culture‑war stunt deepens division and disrespects the meaning of both the holiday and the Constitution.[21][27]
Kristol’s ‘Annoy MAGA’ Post Turns a Freedom Holiday into a Jab
Political commentator Bill Kristol used his X account to tell followers, “Annoy MAGA,” and then praised “millions of Americans” who would commemorate Juneteenth while claiming Donald Trump and J. D. Vance would ignore the holiday.[6] His message did not focus on prayer, unity, or the courage of former slaves. Instead, it framed the day as a chance to poke at people who support Trump. Conservative outlet coverage noted that he seemed more excited about needling “MAGA” than honoring the last enslaved Americans freed.[1]
Kristol’s post fits his wider anti‑Trump activism. He has aligned himself with groups that say they are “defending democracy” and urge protests, calls to Congress, and constant resistance to Trump and his voters.[2][4] That record makes it hard to read “Annoy MAGA” as a harmless joke. It looks more like another attempt to turn every civic moment into a loyalty test: you either join his side’s ritual or get painted as anti‑freedom. That posture feeds the feeling that elites despise everyday conservatives.
What Juneteenth Really Marks — and Who First Backed It
Juneteenth marks the moment when enslaved people in Texas finally learned of freedom, long after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, and it has been celebrated by Black Americans for generations.[10] The holiday was later recognized in many states and became a federal holiday to commemorate the end of slavery nationwide, not as a rally against one party.[11] Early support came from Republicans who saw emancipation as part of the party’s legacy and pushed to recognize that history when many Democrat leaders resisted such moves.[1]
Research groups that favor the left still describe Juneteenth in simple terms: a day to honor the end of slavery and reflect on the long fight against racism.[10][11] That definition leaves room for shared respect from people of every race and party. Yet the same media world now pushes a new spin. One article at The Bulwark, where Kristol has strong ties, openly brands Juneteenth the “anti‑MAGA holiday,” framing the day as a badge for those who stand against Trump supporters rather than as a unifying remembrance of freedom.[18]
How the Left’s Culture‑War Spin Alienates Conservatives
Polling from the University of Massachusetts Amherst found only a small share of Republican voters backed making Juneteenth a federal holiday, reflecting deep suspicion that the left would turn it into another lecture about their supposed racism.[15] Activists and writers on the left then treated that doubt as proof that “MAGA hates Juneteenth,” instead of asking why people might distrust Washington’s motives.[5][18] Kristol’s call to “Annoy MAGA” feeds that cycle, signaling that the real goal is not unity but humiliation of political opponents in front of a cheering online crowd.
Social‑science work shows that in a polarized climate, people on both sides search for stories that help them attack the other side, and social media rewards the most toxic, out‑group shots.[21][24] Telling millions of Americans that a major holiday is now a chance to “annoy” their neighbors does exactly that. It encourages sneering rather than listening. It also makes it easier for some progressives to dismiss any conservative concern about holiday politicization as mere bigotry, instead of a defense of shared civic symbols from partisan capture.
Why Conservatives See a Deeper Pattern of Weaponized History
For many on the right, Kristol’s comment does not stand alone. It looks like one more example of what researchers and watchdogs describe as partisan politicians twisting American history into a weapon.[27] From school‑board fights to attacks on monuments to constant claims that Trump voters want to “erase history,” the message from many institutions is clear: traditional conservatives are the villain in every story.[16][17] Turning Juneteenth into an “anti‑MAGA holiday” fits that pattern by suggesting that anyone wary of this new framing must also be against Black freedom.

This framing insults both the holiday and millions of citizens. Juneteenth should be a chance for all Americans to remember that our nation ended slavery under a Republican president, at the cost of hundreds of thousands of lives, and kept moving toward the promise that all men are created equal.[10][11] When pundits tell people to use that day to troll their neighbors, they cheapen the sacrifice and deepen divides. Conservatives who honor freedom, the Constitution, and equal dignity can reject that bait while still respecting the day’s true meaning.
