The unlikely partnership comes after the Colorado Supreme Court ruling deemed Trump ineligible to appear on the state’s primary ballot in 2024. Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to endorse Christie’s criticism of the court’s decision and amplify his remarks.
One of the statements Trump reposted was a screenshot of a RealClearPolitics article featuring Christie’s take on the matter. In a departure from his usual stance on Trump, Christie argued that voters should be the ones to determine the former president’s political fate. “Donald Trump should not be prevented from being president of the United States by any United States court. The US voters should be the final voice to defeat Trump as president,” Christie stated.
Additionally, Christie underscored the importance of affording Americans a fair trial prior to any deprivation of their rights. While his endorsement of Trump might be unexpected for some, Christie maintained that it should be evidence of his lack of personal animosity towards the ex-president. The attributed text from Christie clarified, “I understand that my stance on Donald Trump may seem contradictory to many, but I hope this serves as confirmation that I bear no ill will towards him.”
The decision of the Colorado Supreme Court hinged on the assertion that Trump’s conduct both preceding and during the Capitol attack on January 6, 2021, contravened Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. This particular section stipulates that individuals involved in insurrection or rebellion against the Constitution, or those who offer assistance or support to their adversaries, are disqualified from holding public office in the future.
As expected, Trump has vowed to appeal the Colorado ruling and take the matter to the U.S. Supreme Court. The highest court’s decision in the land will ultimately determine the future of Trump’s political aspirations. Until then, the unexpected alliance between Trump and Christie has drawn attention and raised questions about the dynamics within the GOP’s 2024 presidential race.
