On Saturday night, the father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was taken into custody.
53-year-old Pat Mahomes Sr. was detained in Texas for driving while intoxicated. After a night in jail, he was freed on a $10,000 bond. This wasn’t the first time.
In 2019, former MLB pitcher Mahomes Sr. served 40 days in prison for DWI, with most of that time spent on weekends. He had already been arrested for a DWI before that.
According to the police, Mahomes showed four signs of intoxication during the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus eye test, five signs during the Walk and Turn test, and two signs during the One Leg Stand. He also volunteered to undergo Standardized Field Sobriety Tests.
While on routine patrol, authorities noticed Mahomes’ vehicle going slower than the surrounding traffic. After running a registration check, they found the vehicle’s expiration date was 2022.
Mahomes Sr.’s arrest occurs precisely one week before Sunday’s Super Bowl LVIII, which will be held at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas and pits his son’s squad against the San Francisco 49ers.
At the end of January, Mahomes Sr. made a joke about how he hoped he wouldn’t have to watch the Chiefs’ AFC Championship game against the Baltimore Ravens on January 28th alongside Jason Kelce and Taylor Swift. Swift is reportedly dating Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, and when asked on the Evan & Tiki WFAN Sports Radio show if he intended to sit with Swift, Mahomes Sr. joked and said, “I hope not.”
With a win for the Chiefs, Mahomes will tie for third all-time among quarterbacks with Troy Aikman and Earl Morrall, and he will be making his fourth Super Bowl appearance. He is currently behind Tom Brady (seven wins), Joe Montana (four wins), and Terry Bradshaw (two wins).
