Politicizing a National Tragedy
While rescue workers are still pulling bodies from the floodwaters in Texas, Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell is already working to politicize the tragedy. In an appearance on CNN, the California congressman called for a congressional investigation into the disaster, immediately attempting to place blame on the Trump administration.

Swalwell suggested that staffing cuts at the National Weather Service (NWS), part of the Trump administration’s broader effort to shrink the federal bureaucracy, may be responsible for the high death toll.
A “Responsibility” to Blame Trump
“I do think, as lawmakers, we have a responsibility, though, to look at, ‘Did cuts affect the ability for folks on the ground and at the camp to have an earlier, better warning?'” Swalwell said, according to the Washington Examiner.
Of course, Swalwell’s newfound concern for the “hard work of government workers” is deeply ironic, coming from a party that has spent years demonizing law enforcement agencies like ICE and the Border Patrol. Critics were quick to point out the hypocrisy.
A Cynical and Predictable Ploy
The call for an investigation is being seen by many as a cynical and predictable attempt to use a national tragedy to score cheap political points against a Republican administration. As reported by Breitbart, conservative commentators have blasted Swalwell’s remarks, noting that the NWS did issue timely and accurate warnings about the potential for catastrophic flooding.
The failure appears to have been at the local level, where emergency warning systems did not adequately alert residents in the path of the torrent. But for Swalwell, the facts are secondary to the opportunity to attack his political opponents. His performance is a perfect example of the left’s playbook: never let a crisis go to waste, especially if you can find a way to blame it on Donald Trump.
