Moment of Silence Held for Rachel Minaya, Late Wife of Yankees Executive

A minute of silence was observed before Saturday’s game between the Tampa Bay Rays and the New York Yankees in memory of Rachel Minaya, 55, who died suddenly. Rachel was the wife of Omar Minaya, a senior consultant of baseball operations for the Yankees.

The team shared a photo of Rachel Minaya on social media, and it was shown on the video board at Yankee Stadium.

In a statement posted on X, they expressed their “deepest condolences” to Rachel’s loved ones during this difficult time.

Omar Minaya was not home when his wife Rachel was found dead on Saturday in their New Jersey home.

Although suicide was ruled out, the cause of death has not been disclosed. Justin and Teddy are the Minayas’ two grown sons. According to the article, the Minayas were wed for over 30 years.

Starting as a scout with the Texas Rangers, Omar Minaya has been involved with baseball for decades.

Beginning in 2023, Omar Minaya served as a senior advisor to Brian Cashman, the general manager of the Yankees. From 2004–2010, he was the general manager of the New York Mets. From 2017–2020, he was a special assistant to the team. Prior to the franchise’s relocation to Washington, he was the general manager of the Montreal Expos from 2002 to 2004.

He became the first Latino to assume the position of general manager in Major League Baseball with the Montreal Expos.

Pedro Martinez and Carlos Beltran were among the key players he signed when he returned to the Mets following the 2004 season. Minaya returned to the Mets in 2017 after a spell with the Padres and several organizational changes.

Steve Cohen acquired the team two hours before he was dismissed. In January 2023, he became a senior advisor to the Yankees’ baseball operations.

Minaya was named general manager of the Montreal Expos shortly before the team’s dissolution, becoming the first Hispanic rising to that position in MLB.

According to Sports Illustrated, in 2007, Omar met Rachel in 1989 in a New York City hair shop before his ascent through the league. They got married the following year.
