Contamination Alert
Coca-Cola drinkers across Illinois and Wisconsin are being urged to check their soda cans after a significant recall was issued due to plastic contamination. The recall affects over 10,000 cans of Coca-Cola Original Taste, with approximately 864 twelve-packs included in the warning. It comes after a similar occurrence in Europe last month, when products were recalled due to the potential presence of chlorate, a chemical that can cause serious health problems.
The FDA has categorized the most recent as a Class II recall, indicating “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.” Health officials stressed that while no serious injuries have been reported thus far, consuming foreign objects in food or beverages could lead to dangerous complications.
How To Identify Affected Products
Consumers should look for specific identification markers to determine if their Coca-Cola products are part of the recall. The affected 12-packs have a date code of ‘SEP2925MDA’ with time stamps between 11:00 and 12:53.
Each individual can within these packs has a UPC of 49000-00634 6, while the full 12-pack UPC is 0 49000-02890 4.
Health Concerns and Consumer Response
The FDA warns that ‘hard or sharp foreign objects‘ in products may cause serious injuries. Dr. Mark Fischer said ingestion of these objects could require surgical removal if they become lodged in the digestive system.
Nonprofits including the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank are actively checking their Coca-Cola inventory, while customers who purchased the affected products are advised not to consume them under any circumstances and to return unused 12-packs to stores for a potential full refund.
This recall follows another recent food safety incident where Del Monte Foods recalled over 8,000 cases of Good & Gather Cut Green Beans due to similar foreign object contamination concerns.
